Anti-Bullying Play, 'Hope', Impresses Years 7 and 8
The outstanding anti-bullying production, Hope, came to our school recently, where actors performed it to Years 7 and 8 and organised discussion and workshop activities afterwards.
Hope is the story of a beautiful and successful pop star returning to the town where she grew up for the first time in years. A chance encounter between her and an old school acquaintance brings back painful memories of her childhood and the systematic abuse and bullying she suffered at the hands of a classmate. It is a story of courage, self-empowerment and redemption.
After watching the performance students took part in discussions and activities about different types of bullying, why some people become bullies, and how to deal with conflicts.
What students said...
"I think Hope was very good because it showed how people can hold you back but really you shouldn’t keep it enclosed but release that talent and be proud." Sebastian
"I liked the Hope play because it teaches us the different ways people bully and why, and how it affects people." Elijah
"I really enjoyed this performance because it shows us that the tables can really turn when somebody gets bullied, and you should speak up to someone if you are being bullied." Sarah
"I enjoyed the performance because of its realistic approach to bullying and how it outlines all three people - victim, bully and bystander."
Teachers said...
"I really enjoyed the performance and liked how the issues covered were relevant and current for our young audience. It was engaging due to the juxtaposition of humour and serious content, meaning it wasn’t too intense but hard hitting at the right moments." Ms Cox
"The theatre performance was engaging, fun and thought-provoking. Students thoroughly enjoyed it and left with a better understanding of the long term impact of bullying." Mr Kwamegah
