CERN 2015
On Monday 6th March 12 budding A level particle physicists from Harris City Academy Crystal Palace flew to Geneva, Switzerland, to see the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. We took a tour of the site with one of the senior researchers, and saw the tunnel where Muons travel out of the ground at nearly the speed of light. We also had a lecture from a Doctor of Physics, closely involved with the hunt for anti-matter. After a hearty lunch in the CERN canteen, we headed to the United Nations building, where for years Prime Ministers, Presidents and diplomats have met to forge peace treaties. This was followed by a boat ride on Lake Geneva, then more food, this time in the historic town centre. Students are now back in the classroom, learning about the Standard Model for Particle Physics, all the better prepared having tried to hunt down the sub atomic particles themselves!
