Thematic Day
Thematic Day
On Thursday 9th February we ran another successful Thematic Day looking a variety of topics from careers to the Holocaust.
Year 7
Students explored ‘Astounding Asia’ which looked at cultural and mathematical links to different Asian communities: Islamic geometric patterns, learning the story of the Koi and the lessons about resilience that students then portrayed in a painting, origami, and multiplication around the world.
Year 8
Students explored the topic of rights and responsibilities within our society. The day was organised to build on knowledge: it started with situational scenarios and different responses; they then learnt about the strikes and why industries strike; the importance of democracy and our right to vote; and these sessions all culminated in the final session of writing and presenting their manifestos before a final vote.
Year 9
Students explored different aspects of the Holocaust: what the Holocaust was, the events that led to it and who was responsible. The final assembly of the day was delivered by Annick, a Holocaust survivor, who spoke to the students about her experiences and answered questions.
Year 10
Students started the day with a speaker from Southbank Colleges who informed them of the different pathways that a college can offer and the launch of our work experience placements that will take place over the week of 10th – 14th July, 2023. Students then spent the rest of the day preparing for this experience through use of the Unifrog platform, how to write a CV and prepare for an interview.
Year 11
Students started the day with a walk through of the English Language Paper 2 exam with an AQA examiner. Students then completed targeted intervention in Science and Mathematics.
Year 12
Students also had their work experience launch and were given letters to start finding their placements. They also had the opportunity to use the Unifrog platform which brings all the available information on different industries into one place to support students making the best choices and giving them the information to help them create strong applications for further education or jobs. They also explored the importance of preparing for future finances and why money matters.
Year 13
In Year 13 students started the day with a speaker from Investment 20/20 and then they had bespoke targeted subject intervention in: Personal financial matters, Economics, Maths, Psychology, Biology and English Literature.
