Victorian Surgery and Public Health Issues Come to Life
Year 11 History students visited the Old Operating Theatre in London Bridge earlier this month.
The visit began with a guided walk around the streets of Southwark to give students an understanding of 19th century public health and why there were so many cholera outbreaks in this period.
Then they experienced a workshop in Europe’s old surviving operating theatre. Students learnt about the complexities and challenges of Victorian surgery including the use of anaesthetics, why infections spread so easily and the development of antiseptic/aseptic surgery.
The visit was a chance to ‘bring to life’ and revise the lesson content from Year 10.
